Historic Preservation Commission
On February 14, 2005, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 05-22 to establish the Lexington Historic Preservation Commission. According to the laws of the State of North Carolina, the Lexington Historic Preservation Commission is established so that City Council can "safeguard the heritage of the City by preserving any district or landmark herein that embodies important elements of its culture, history, architectural history or prehistory" and "promote the use and conservation of such district or landmark for the education, pleasure and enrichment of the residents of the City and the State as a whole." The Commission is comprised of five at-large members appointed by the Mayor and City Council. Each member is eligible to serve two consecutive three-year terms. At least three of the Commission members must have demonstrated special interest, experience and/or education in history, architecture, archaeology or related fields.
