Lexington has been composting residuals generated by the wastewater treatment plant at 500 Glendale Road since 1990. This process allows the City to dispose of wastewater sludge, as well as most of the leaf and yard waste collection in an environmentally friendly manner. Every year, about 6 million pounds are sold to citizens. In 2000, the compost facility was awarded EPA’s national award for excellence.
Compost is sold to the public from 8:00-4:00 Monday through Friday and from 11:00-2:00 on Saturday. The employees at the site cannot accept cash. Please make plans to remit a check or money order made payable to the City of Lexington. Visit the City's Fee Schedule for current compost rates. The City will deliver full loads (one dump truck full) to individuals within a reasonable drive distance as defined in the fee schedule. Discounted bulk rates are also available.
