The Office of Business and Community Development administers zoning and land use regulations found within the City of Lexington Land Use Ordinance, commonly referred to as the zoning ordinance. It contains the list of uses permitted within each zoning district identified on the Zoning Map, as well as development and design standards for new construction.
The ordinance requires that zoning permits be issued by the city prior to many land use activities, in order to certify that the proposal is in compliance with the regulations. Minor zoning permits are issued at the staff level for minor projects such as construction of single-family houses, most new business openings, as well as placement of new storage buildings, fences and signs. More significant land use and development requires a major zoning permit, which is reviewed by the Planning Board and approved by City Council. The zoning ordinance provides specific information on the permit approval process. Click here for an Application for a Major Zoning Permit or for an Application for a Sign Permit. The office is also responsible for issuing permits for special events such as festivals, customer appreciation activities, block parties and the like.
