Public Services Worker I, II or III (Street)

Compensation/Pay Rate: $12.17 - $21.80 per hour plus excellent benefits

**One vacant position is available.** The work level and hourly pay are contingent upon experience and qualifications as a Public Services Worker I, II or III for the Street Department. Performs unskilled, semiskilled, intermediate semiskilled or difficult skilled and technical work in the construction, maintenance, placement and repair of public infrastructures and facilities such as streets, sidewalks, drainage, signage, bridges and related structures.

Public Services Worker I

Minimum Qualifications
• Graduation from high school or GED;
• Valid NC driver’s license and good driving record. Must obtain Class B CDL within six months;
• Ability to assist with ice and snow removal and rotate on-call responsibilities within department;
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions.
• Concrete experience is a plus.

Essential Functions
• Gathers necessary tools, materials and supplies for assignment;
• Patches, repairs and maintains streets, repairs curbs and gutters, assists with backfill or landscaping projects;
• Rebuilds road shoulders;
• Digs ditches and constructs retaining walls;
• Clears and trims trees from roadway;
• Operates dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, skid steers and a variety of hand tools and small equipment in the performance of maintenance and construction tasks;
• Pours/places and finishes concrete;
• Cleans catch basis, installs, fits and secures storm drainage and other pipe connections, keeps pipe on grade;
• Assists with ice and snow removal.

Public Services Worker II

Minimum Qualifications
• Graduation from high school or GED and two years’ experience in construction and maintenance work;
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
• Possession of Class B CDL and good driving record;
• Demonstrable skill equivalent to two years’ experience as a Public Serviceworker I;
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions.

Essential Functions
• Gathers and transports necessary tools, materials and supplies for assignment;
• Patches, repairs and maintains streets, repairs curbs and gutters, assists with backfill or landscaping projects;
• Rebuilds road shoulders;
• Reads and interprets plans and helps layout projects;
• Grades soil, clears rights-of-way, installs signage and highway markings;
• Digs ditches and constructs retaining walls;
• Clears and trims trees from roadway;
• Pours/places and finishes concrete;
• Cleans catch basins, installs, fits and secures storm drainage and other pipe connections, keeps pipe on grade;
• Assists with ice and snow removal.

Public Services Worker III

Minimum Qualifications
• Graduation from high school or GED and four years’ experience in construction and maintenance work;
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
• Possession of Class B CDL and good driving record;
• Demonstrable skills equivalent to two years as a Public Serviceworker II;
• Road Scholar Certification;
• Ability to assist with ice and snow removal and rotate on-call responsibilities within department.

Essential Functions
• Gathers and transports necessary tools, materials and supplies for assignment;
• Patches, repairs and maintains streets, repairs curbs and gutters, assists with backfill or landscaping projects;
• Rebuilds road shoulders;
• Reads and interprets plans and helps layout projects;
• Grades soil, clears rights-of-way, installs signage and highway markings;
• Digs ditches and constructs retaining walls;
• Clears and trims trees from roadway;
• Operates dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, skid steers asphalt loader and rubber tired loader, mini excavator, asphalt truck and a variety of hand tools and small equipment in the performance of maintenance and construction tasks;
• Pours/places and finishes concrete;
• Cleans catch basins, installs, fits and secures storm drainage and other pipe connections, keeps pipe on grade;
• Assists with ice and snow removal.

Physical Demands
This is moderate work requiring lifting and carrying up to 45 pounds frequently, and up to 85 pounds occasionally. Requires walking over uneven surfaces, standing for long periods of time, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching in any direction with the hands and arms. Visual acuity is required for inspecting small defects and or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms’ length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and in determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work. Requires ability to exchange information accurately and quickly. Requires hearing to receive detailed information and to make fine distinctions in sound. Worker is subject to OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard.

Work Schedule
Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm. On-call and rotating overtime.

Special Requirements
The worker may be subject to drug and alcohol testing under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act and this position may be considered safety sensitive as defined by the Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy. Requires Flagger Certification and NIMS IS 100, 200 and 700. The worker is subject to WorkFit and PreWork policies and screening. May be required to work with Recycling and Waste Collection Management or Public Grounds divisions during labor shortages or other times of need.
