Utility Plant Operator I, II OR III (Water Treatment Plant)

**One vacant position is available.** The work level and hourly rate are contingent upon experience and qualifications as a Utility Plant Operator I, II or III. Performs beginning, intermediate or difficult semi-skilled work in operating and maintaining a Water Treatment PlantThis position provides a vertical career ladder opportunity that may allow the selected candidate to advance to a higher job title and pay with the acquisition of additional knowledge, skills, certifications, abilities, responsibilities and experience during the course of employment.

Minimum Qualifications for Utility Plant Operator I
• Graduation from high school or equivalent;
• Driver’s license valid in NC and good driving record;
• Ability to work regularly;
• Grade C Water Treatment Operator’s License within 18 months.

Minimum Qualifications for Utility Plant Operator II
• Graduation from high school or equivalent;
• Demonstrable skills equivalent to two years’ experience operating a wastewater treatment plant;
• Driver’s license valid in NC and good driving record;
• Ability to work regularly;
• Possession of a Grade C Water Treatment Operator’s License.

Minimum Qualifications for Utility Plant Operator III
• Graduation from high school or equivalent;
• Driver’s license valid in NC and good driving record;
• Demonstrable skills equivalent to three years’ experience in operating a wastewater treatment plant;
• Ability to work regularly;
• Possession of a Grade B Water Treatment Operator’s License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals;
• Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages;
• Ability to read and understand the policy and procedures, safety manual and instructions;
• Thorough knowledge of, and skill in the use and care of, hand and power tools;
• Thorough knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to water and wastewater treatment plant operations;
• Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of the necessary safety precautions;
• Ability to perform routine housekeeping and minor building and grounds maintenance;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates (for Operator's II & III), and the general public.

Essential Functions
• Inspect plant equipment for proper functions;
• Monitor meters, gauges , pumps, blowers, valves etc. to determine load requirements and detect malfunctions;
• Collect and test water and wastewater samples, using test equipment and color analysis standards;
• Record operational data, personnel attendance and meter or gauge readings on specified forms;
• Operate and adjust controls on equipment to meet changing operating conditions;
• Maintain, repair and lubricate equipment using hand and power tools;
• Clean and maintain tanks, filter beds and other work areas;
• Perform general custodial and grounds maintenance work.

Physical Demands
Requires ability to lift and carry up to 70 pounds, push/pull up to 150 pounds. Work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching with the hands in any direction, standing, walking over uneven surfaces, grasping and fingering. Communication is required for exchanging information in person and by telephone. Visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surrounding and activities.

Work Environment
The worker is subject to inside and outside in all weather conditions. The worker is exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Operators II and III are also exposed to sounds and noises associated with moving mechanical parts.

Work Schedule
8 hour shifts. Will be assigned to 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift. Must be able to work any shift and work every other weekend.

Special Requirements
The worker may be subject to cross-training and working with the water treatment plant. The worker may be subject to final OSHA standards on Bloodborne Pathogens. The position may be considered safety sensitive under the Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy. The worker is subject to PreWork and WorkFit screenings.
