New Pigs to be Unveiled in Uptown Lexington

The eagerly awaited arrival of the newest pigs in Uptown Lexington’s wildly popular public art project, Pigs in the City begins with the Premiere and After Party on Monday, May 18th at the Edward C. Smith Civic Center in uptown Lexington. This group of pigs marks the fifth year new pigs have been placed around the uptown area since the project began in 2003.

“This year, we wanted to unveil our 20 new pigs in grand style,” said Toby Prince, President of Uptown Lexington, Inc’s Board of Directors. “Those who attend will be treated to a movie premiere type event. “

Not only will they be the first to see all 20 pigs in one location, they will be the first to see the logo for Pigs in the City 5. The slogan for this round of pigs will also be announced. And, to compliment the slogan, local musician Ken Davis has written an original song which he will perform at the event. “This is a new feature for Pigs in the City and we are thrilled that Ken has captured the spirit of this round of pigs. When you hear it, the tune just stays in your head,” said Prince.

“As always, the identity and design of the 20 new pigs has been a closely guarded secret since artists began the process to transform a plain white fiberglass pig into the works of art you see on the streets,” said Jo Ellen Edwards, Executive Director of Uptown Lexington, Inc. “Each year, the artists seem to out-do themselves and this year is no exception.”

Local media personality Willie Edwards of Hometown TV Today, will read the biography of each pig while they are introduced to their fans for the first time. “This gives those attending a glimpse into their creation through their sponsor and creators minds,’ said Prince. “Some are whimsical, some are serious. With names like Sparky, Gracie, Zeb, Heavenly Hog, ChalkBOAR, Captain Porkgan, Bass Hog, and Bacon Beacon you can start to imagine the tales these pigs will tell.”

Also announced at the Premiere will be the first four inductees into the Pigs in the City Hall of Fame. Ballot boxes all around uptown have been filling up with votes cast by fans of the nominated pigs.

“This year, we also wanted to make the event one that is not only fun and memorable, but also affordable,” said Edwards. Fans can purchase tickets to the Premiere and After Party or just the Premiere. Premiere and After Party tickets are $17.50 each or 2 for $30. This includes a center front section reserved seat, admission to the After Party with food and drinks, and 10% off the Pigs in the City merchandise. General Admission tickets for just the Premiere are $2.00 each. Attendees are also asked to bring non-perishable items for Pastor’s Pantry and Crisis Ministry.

Tickets can be purchased at Uptown Lexington’s office (220 North Main Street), All About Education, Gallery Hall, The Candy Factory, Lanier’s, and the EC Smith Civic Center. Tickets to the Premiere and After Party are limited! General Admission tickets can also be purchased at the door.

“We’re looking forward to showing off the newest group of pigs and we hope everyone comes to celebrate their arrival with us,” said Edwards. The pigs will make their debut on the streets on Friday evening, May 22 with the kick off of strolls in Uptown Lexington.
